Habitats Regulations Reporting 2019–2024: Reporting Approach and Guidance 2026

Abstract

Every six years, statutory reports on the condition of nationally important habitats and species are produced under the Habitats Regulations (England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland and the Offshore Regulations (UK Offshore). Reports covering the 2019–2024 reporting period were published in January 2026. Further detail on the reporting can be found on the Habitats Regulations Reporting 2019 to 2024 webpage on the JNCC website.

The following documents outline the guidance used and approach taken in the 2019–2024 reporting.

Guidance Documents

To assist countries with the 2019–2024 reporting, JNCC created guidance on how conservation status and its component parameters should be assessed for Habitats and Non-bird species, and how each of the reporting fields should be completed. These guidelines are based on the Bern Resolution 8 reporting Explanatory Notes and Guidelines, which set out a comprehensive format for the reporting. Two separate guidance documents were produced, one covering Habitats and another covering Non-bird species.

Approach Document

The Approach document provides a detailed description of the UK approach to completing the reporting for both Species (including Birds) and Habitats. This includes detail on the UK interpretation of the Bern reporting guidelines, technical reporting details, and status assessment methods.
