Area under restoration

The UK Biodiversity Indicators have been reviewed in response to the latest goals and targets agreed under the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).

The GBF is accompanied by a monitoring framework, which includes indicators to measure progress. ‘Area under restoration’ is an agreed headline indicator within this framework, with particular relevance to Target 2 ‘Restore 30% of All Degraded Ecosystems’. Whilst some information is already available on relevant commitments and targets within the UK, further work is needed to develop and report this indicator in the future. JNCC, in collaboration with the Devolved Governments and Statutory Nature Conservation Bodies, intends to do this through developing and agreeing definitions and criteria for inclusion of data and investigating how the quality of data collected can be strengthened.
