A new interactive dashboard by JNCC gives conservationists, researchers, policymakers and the public simpler access to vital information about which species in Great Britain are at risk of extinction.
The dashboard allows users to search and filter the data easily by taxonomic group or threat status and download the underlying data directly. Red Lists use internationally recognised criteria developed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) to categorise species from Least Concern through to Critically Endangered.
In Great Britain, over 10,000 species are assessed – from marine molluscs and starfish to seabirds, plants to beetles. More than 40 lists for different taxonomic groups are compiled on a regular basis – a phenomenal amount of work from the partners involved in the assessment and the volunteers who contribute the data underlying them.
When combined with other evidence and expert input, these species Red Lists are a powerful tool. They help highlight species most at risk and identify knowledge gaps, which can inform strategic planning at national and local levels.
JNCC collates information on taxa that have been assessed, quality assured, and published in a Statutory Nature Conservation Body approved GB IUCN Red Lists. These assessments have now been added to the new JNCC GB Red List Dashboard, which is being piloted as a new way of sharing this information more openly and accessibly. All underlying data is also available to download from JNCC's Resource Hub.
This work would not be possible without the contribution of thousands of citizen science volunteers, who provide wildlife records every year that form the essential raw data behind many Red List assessments. We would like to thank our Red List partners for their continued efforts in collecting, quality assuring and publishing this vital evidence.
